America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and buy recycled products. Since its inception in 1997, it has grown to include millions of Americans pledging to increase their recycling habits at home and work and to buy products made with recycled materials.
Through America Recycles Day, Keep America Beautiful, Inc. (KAB), its affiliates (including Keep Evansville Beautiful) and the National Recycling Coalition, Inc. (NRC) support local communities in educating citizens about the benefits of recycling.
Every year Keep Evansville Beautiful teams up with Alcoa Warrick Operations for an America Recycles Day contest that encourages individuals to recycle their cans for cash and designate a school, church or non-profit to be entered into a special drawing to win one of three cash prizes. Last year’s winners were: PAAWS of Evansville ($200), Good Shepherd Grade School ($150) and Resrrection School, ($100).
Aluminum is infinitely recyclable – saving energy and protecting the environment. Recycling one ton of aluminum saves enough energy to power an average home for 10 years.
The contest usually begins in September and recyclers can enter the contest until mid November. Keep Evansville Beautiful will announce the winners of the 2011 contest on America Recycles Day which is November 15th!
