Doggy Doo Dilemma

Pick Up After Your Pet. Pet waste is litter. Pet litter is full of bacteria, parasites and other pathogens that pose a serious health risk to humans. Dog urine burns lawns, plants and shrubs with its high nitrogen and salt content… so what can you do?

You can help!

  • Encourage pet owners to pick up after their pets
  • Remove & properly dispose of your pets waste
  • Grab bags at dog bag dispensers in local parks and on the Greenway

Cleaning up after pets is not just part of being a responsible resident; it’s a law to protect neighbors and natural resources.

Hi! I enjoyed the article in Sunday's newspaper. I am a professional pet sitter. I don't leave the house without my "tools" of the trade, including pick-up bags & treats! I have even offered a bag to someone when I've seen them leave their dog's mess behind. The look on their face says it all sometimes. I walk dogs all over the tri-state. I wouldn't dream of leaving a mess behind. And, I see people watching as we walk by them. In downtown Evansville, I've even had them stop and thank me for cleaning up the mess.

Picking up after your dog IS a big deal, but should be second nature. It's surprising, yet shameful, that everyone doesn't see it this way.

Enjoy the pictures. One is just for fun. The other is actually two of my three babies. The Great Dane's name is Coal (short for charcoal) and the Vizsla is Cinni (short for Cinnamon).

Happy Trails to you & yours!

Arizona is attempting to legislate the act of responsible pet ownership by fining those caught not poop scooping. There are many dog parks and greenways and lots of free doggie litter bags available. There is a container next to every dispenser of bags so it couldn't be any easier. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen people out with their dogs who just go off and ignore the 'pile'. I was cussed at and threatened for suggesting it might be a better idea to pick it up and put it in the container right next to poop pile than to leave it on the ground.

Now I live in beautiful southern Indiana in a wonderful little neighborhood where only 3 residents actually walk their dogs and we all scoop the poop! However, neighbors from the adjacent subdivision come to our tiny cul-de-sac for the specific purpose of allowing their dogs to poop and flee. One neighbor comes every morning at 8:30 a.m. ... he's regular and so is the dog! I've suggested he bring bags with him and his response is, "So what, it's an empty lot ... " Pointing out that a house is 20 feet from where his dog just went potty has no effect on his decision to poop and go.

It's a lost cause*, I fear.

Litter Prevention

The number one littered object: Cigarette Butts

Be environmentally responsible:

  • Properly dispose your cigarette butts in an astray.
  • Field strip your cigarette butts-cigarette filters will NOT decompose!
  • Use a pocket ashtray when away from community ashtrays or receptacles.
  • NEVER toss a cigarette butt out the car window.  It takes 1-5 years for a cigarette butt to breakdown, causing clogged waste water systems.

Cigarette littering can result in fines of $1,000 and more!
Stop inside the KEB office to get a FREE pocket ash tray!
