Airport Gateway Project - Project Intent

Welcome to the official webpage for the Gateway Welcome Structure and the quest for the art to "cap" it

A blank canvas awaiting its artist

Update: Six regional or regionally relevant artists have been selected to create maquettes and to provide detailed specifications for a proposal to create an iconic significant work of public art at the Evansville Regional Airport Gateway. Maquettes are due to Keep Evansville Beautiful by April 20, 2012.

The Public Sculpture will be part of a project to create an iconic welcome to regional guests near the airport's exit. Through this effort, KEB's goals are to bring together the interplay between Nature and Humankind. The resulting effect will be a natural green space and art work that will create a lasting impression to those who visit the area.

As Evansville, Indiana is located in the Ohio River Valley and, is close to Kentucky and Illinois, this Regional Airport Gateway's design theme is based on the relationship between nature and humans, past and present. The elements of Tri-State region are the river, the woodlands, Native American history and the community's history. The State Route 57 corridor will feature native plants -- wildflowers and grasses, a mound after the Native American mounds in the area, and a wall to be the man-made structure that will also retain the platform for the free-standing sculpture.

The Sculpture Should:

  • Create excitement and interest for the community and visitors
  • Be a modern interpretation of the Gateway's design theme
  • Be of a design so that the public can easily comprehend the concept
  • Be conscientious of environmental conservation

The sculpture must be made of sustainable materials that can withstand the outdoors and are low maintenance. The sculpture can be made of or incorporate recycled materials as well. The sculpture will be accessible to the public. Due to the Airport and the sculpture's location, the sculpture's size and lighting will have restrictions.
